MUMBAI, India, Oct. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641119831 A) filed by Sathyabama Institute Of Science And Technology Deemed To Be University Centre For Drug Discovery on October 07, 2026, for Biodegradable Biopot Manufactured From Cow Dung, Vetiver And Lemongrass For Sustainable Horticultural Applications.
Inventors include Dr. M. Radhakrishnan; and Mr. Kishore Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable horticultural biopot formed from cow dung, vetiver and lemongrass biomass. The biopot comprises a molded organic composite having a cow-dung matrix, fibrous vetiver reinforcement and processed lemongrass material distributed within the matrix. In a preferred formulation, the three components are combined in approximately 60:20:20 proportion, followed by addition of water, mixing, molding, compression, de-molding and controlled drying. The resulting container includes a planting cavity and drainage arrangement for supporting plants during nursery cultivation. The vetiver fibres provide structural reinforcement and contribute to moisture management, while the lemongrass component provides additional plant-derived functionality. The biopot is configured to withstand handling and watering during the nursery stage and to permit transplantation into soil without removal of the container. Following transplantation, the organic composite progressively decomposes and becomes incorporated into the surrounding soil environment. The invention provides a biodegradable horticultural container utilizing agricultural biomass and organic waste.
