MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641105303 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on September 01, 2026, for Biodegradable Alloy For Orthopaedic Implant Applications And Method Of Manufacturing The Same.

Inventors include Radha R; and Prawin Babu L.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: A biodegradable alloy for orthopaedic implant applications and method of manufacturing the same is provided. The biodegradable alloy includes boron and optionally tin. The alloy is manufactured by squeeze casting to obtain a refined, dense, and low-porosity microstructure. Boron-containing phases contribute to mechanical strength, hardness, wear resistance, and biological functionality, while tin-containing phases improve corrosion resistance and provide antibacterial functionality. The alloys exhibit controlled degradation, suitable mechanical properties, and enhanced biological performance, including cytocompatibility, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. The alloy may be fabricated into screws, plates, pins, staples, wires, and customized orthopaedic implants, providing temporary mechanical support during bone healing followed by gradual biodegradation, thereby reducing the requirement for secondary implant-removal surgery.
