MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641096856 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on August 11, 2026, for Biodegradable Active Food-Packaging Film Comprising Chitosan And Onion-Peel-Derived Ferulic Acid.
Inventors include Ramesh Pathy Manian; and Dhesiga K.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT BIODEGRADABLE ACTIVE FOOD-PACKAGING FILM COMPRISING CHITOSAN AND ONION-PEEL-DERIVED FERULIC ACID A biodegradable active food-packaging film (10) is provided. The biodegradable active food-packaging film (10) comprises a chitosan matrix (12) and ferulic acid (14) extracted from onion-peel biomass (16). The ferulic acid (14) is incorporated into the chitosan matrix (12) such that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the ferulic acid (14) interact with amino groups of the chitosan matrix (12) to form an interconnected polymeric network (30). The interconnected polymeric network (30) exhibits synergistic properties including enhanced antioxidant activity compared to a pure chitosan film, UV-barrier properties with reduced transmittance at wavelengths below 400 nm, and biodegradability under soil burial conditions. A method for preparing the biodegradable active food-packaging film (10) comprises extracting ferulic acid (14) from onion-peel biomass (16), dissolving chitosan (12) in an acidic solution (20), incorporating the extracted ferulic acid (14) into the chitosan solution to form a film-forming mixture, and casting and drying the film-forming mixture.
