MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631107104 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology, Rourkela on September 06, 2026, for Biocompatible Dithiol-Based Redox Adjuvant System For Iron Chelation Therapy.

Inventors include Tanaya Subudhi; and Rabindra Kumar Behera.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT BIOCOMPATIBLE DITHIOL-BASED REDOX ADJUVANT SYSTEM FOR IRON CHELATION THERAPY The present invention relates to a redox- assisted iron mobilization and chelation system for enhanced removal of ferritin-associated iron. The system comprises a biocompatible reduced dithiol, preferably dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA), and an Fe2+-selective iron chelating ligand. DHLA facilitates reductive conversion of ferritin-associated ferric (Fe3+) mineral iron into ferrous (Fe2+) iron and promotes its mobilization from the ferritin mineral core, thereby overcoming kinetic limitations associated with direct chelation of mineralized iron. The mobilized Fe2+ is subsequently captured by the Fe2+-selective chelating ligand, providing a sequential mobilization–transfer–sequestration mechanism. The system demonstrates enhanced iron mobilization and capture compared with chelator-alone approaches. The invention is applicable to systemic iron overload and, owing to the biocompatibility and blood-brain-barrier permeability of DHLA, to disorders associated with central nervous system iron dysregulation.
