Abstract: [038] A water-dispersible bioactive polymer coating composition is disclosed for corrosion protection of mild steel in marine and industrial environments. The composition comprises a chitosan–carboxymethyl cellulose film-forming blend, a tannic-acid-derived polyphenolic component, dispersed lamellar nanoclay and pH- responsive microreservoirs containing sodium phytate. The microreservoirs include alginate-based cores and carboxylated-polymer shells configured to increase inhibitor release under locally alkaline conditions associated with corrosion. The polymer network and lamellar filler provide an electrolyte diffusion barrier, while the microreservoirs supply inhibitor near a coating defect. A method of preparation comprises separate formation of the microreservoirs and nanoclay dispersion, polymer blending and low-shear incorporation of the microreservoirs. The coating may be applied to prepared mild steel by conventional aqueous coating techniques. Accompanied Drawing [FIGS. 1-2].
