Abstract: BIOACTIVE HETEROCYCLIC COMPOUNDS AND A METHOD OF PREPARATION USING HETEROGENEOUS CATALYST The present invention relates to a synthesis of bioactive heterocyclic pyrimido pyrimidine derivatives and a process of preparation thereof. The novel and eco-friendly one pot synthetic approach for the efficient synthesis of 5-phenyl-8-thioxo-7,8,9,10-tetrahydropyrido[2,3-d:6,5-d']dipyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione derivatives. The reaction involves 2- thiobarbituric acid, aromatic aldehydes and 6-aminouracil or 4-amino-6-hydroxy-2-mercaptopyrimidine under mild conditions. Copper nanoparticles supported on carbon microspheres (Cu NP/C) are employed as a heterogeneous catalyst, facilitating the reaction in a water–ethanol (1:1) mixture, offering a green and sustainable reaction medium. The process provides high yields of the target compounds, demonstrating broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. This process highlights the potential of Cu NP/C as an effective and recyclable catalyst for multicomponent reactions, aligning with the principles of green chemistry. The pyrimidine derivatives are reported for various biological activities like antibacterial, antiviral and antimalarial activity.
