Abstract: The demand for new and sustainable water purification systems continues to grow with the increasing scarcity of readily accessible clean water across the globe. An example of one of these systems is the bio-inspired adaptive water purification system which is designed to optimize water purification by mimicking certain aspects of nature. This system takes an adaptive approach to filtration as a response to the dynamic nature of water quality, as compared to the more traditional fixed filtration systems. The water purification systems incorporate the self-cleaning nature of the Lotus Effect and self-transport of water across membranes with the assistance of Aquaporin channels. With these examples and other similar ideas from nature, multiple layers of filtration are created which assist in the removal of impurities while significantly reducing the problems of clogging and the need for frequent maintenance. The system is designed to perform independently and autonomously and with this design, the system minimizes the energy consumption of the system while maximizing the longevity of the Filtration components. The invention has multiple applications ranging from in-home water purification systems to industrial wastewater management systems, emergency water supply systems and in systems designed to offer safe drinking water in regions where such water is not readily available. This system offers a new approach to water purification that is efficient, innovative, and environmentally-friendly while demonstrating responsible design principles
