MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611088585 A) filed by K. R. Mangalam University on July 21, 2026, for Bio-Composite Leather Material From Banana Stem Fibre And Multi-Biomass Components, And Method Of Production.
Inventors include Ajay Murmu; and Indrajeet Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.
Abstract: A bio-composite leather material and a production method are disclosed. The material comprises, by weight, banana stem fibre at forty to fifty-five percent as a structural cellulose backbone, hemp fibre at twenty to thirty percent for tensile and tear reinforcement, a protein-rich biomass binder at ten to twenty percent hydrogen- bonding to the cellulose, a mycelium at five to ten percent for a leather-like grain, and an algae-based bio-resin at three to eight percent as a breathable, water-resistant coating. The components cooperate so flexibility, durability, breathability and surface integrity are obtained together, unlike single-material bio-leathers, and the material is biodegradable and chrome- and petroleum-free. It is made by extracting banana fibre, combining it with hemp, applying the protein binder, thermally deactivating a grown mycelium grain layer, applying the algae coating, and hot-pressing the layers.
