MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641085323 A) filed by E. Lijo; Dr. R. Prabu; and Dr. D. Subramaniam on July 12, 2026, for Bimodal Sugarcane Bagasse Fiber Composite Food-Grade Utensil And Method Of Preparation Thereof.

Abstract: A natural fiber composite food-grade utensil and a method of preparation are disclosed. The utensil comprises a molded body formed from a single biological fiber source, sugarcane bagasse fiber, processed into a fine fraction and a coarse fraction blended in a defined ratio to form a bimodal fiber system, dispersed in a biodegradable binder matrix comprising a biodegradable polymer, a starch adhesive phase, a plasticizer, a mineral filler, and a binder additive. The bimodal fiber system provides packing density, porosity, and flexural strength superior to either fraction alone, comparable to or exceeding two-fiber-species composites, while needing disclosure of only one biological resource. A biodegradable coating may be applied to the food-contact portion. The method comprises washing, drying, pulverizing, and sieving the fiber into two fractions, alkali-treating and blending them, compounding with the binder matrix, molding, drying, and coating, to obtain a utensil with improved strength, reduced water absorption, and biodegradability.
