Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION An integrated bilateral smart footwear system for Parkinson’s disease assessment includes a pair of shoes each incorporating multiple force sensitive resistors positioned under anatomically relevant plantar regions, a six-degree-of- freedom inertial sensor rigidly attached to the shoe, and a microcontroller configured to synchronously acquire plantar pressure and inertial signals during ambulation; embedded firmware segments the signals into gait cycles, extracts spatiotemporal, pressure, asymmetry, and sensor fusion features associated with Parkinsonian gait abnormalities and freezing-of-gait risk, and communicates derived feature vectors wirelessly to an external computing device that executes a machine-learning classifier to generate Parkinson’s disease likelihood and gait severity scores for clinical decision support and prolonged remote monitoring.
