Abstract: A system and method for detecting and localizing leaks in water pipelines uses battery-powered sensing nodes mounted on pipe fittings. Each node samples pipe vibration, performs a multi-level wavelet decomposition, and computes a ratio of energy in a leak-associated sub-band to energy in a reference sub-band. The ratio is compared with an adaptive baseline learned at the location of the node, which reduces false alarms caused by traffic and pump noise. When the ratio exceeds the baseline, the node sends a compact alert without raw data, extending battery life. When adjacent nodes both generate alerts, wavelet-reconstructed signal segments are cross-correlated to determine the position of the leak between them.
