Abstract: Disclosed is a battery charging and balancing system (300) for a vehicle includes a first battery (340) and a second battery (350) connected in series. A first load (360) connects across both batteries; a second load (370) connects across the second battery (350). A power converter (330) transfers energy from an external charger (310) to the first battery (340) during a charging operation, and from the first battery (340) to the second battery (350) during a balancing operation. A controller (320) monitors a first current of the first battery (340) and a second current of the second battery (350) to determine a second load current based on their difference. The controller (320) switches the power converter (330) from the charging operation to the balancing operation based on a comparison of the monitored first current against a threshold value derived from the determined second load current.
