Abstract: According to the present invention, a method of fabricating a basalt fiber reinforced elastomeric isolator (B-FREI) for seismic isolation applications is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of providing a plurality of basalt fiber sheets and a plurality of elastomeric layers, placing a plurality of elastomeric layers and a plurality of basalt fiber sheets alternatively on each other with an adhesive with or without a steel plate on top and bottom sides, thereby forming a stack, positioning the stack within a die mold frame, and placing the mold frame in a hydraulic press and curing the die mold frame at a temperature and a pressure for a period followed by cooling the stack in die mold frame thereby forming the basalt fiber reinforced elastomeric isolator (B-FREI). The Basalt Fiber Reinforced Elastomeric Isolators (B-FREIs) are lightweight, easy to manufacture and environmentally sustainable as eco-friendly fiber sheets are replacing conventional steel shims.
