MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641100839 A) filed by Ms. R. Suganya; and Dr. S. Nagan on August 20, 2026, for Azolla Pigment Based Eco Friendly Nir Reflective Paint For Building Walls To Reduce Ac Load And Mitigate Urban Heat.

Inventors include Ms. R. Suganya; and Dr. S. Nagan.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for formulating an eco-friendly near-infrared (NIR) reflective paint using chlorophyll pigment extracted from Azolla biomass for mitigating urban heat and reducing air-conditioning load. The process comprises collecting and processing fresh Azolla to obtain powdered biomass, followed by extraction of chlorophyll through a combined maceration and decoction technique using an organic solvent. The extracted pigment is concentrated by solvent evaporation, conditioned with calcium carbonate and an alcohol-based dispersing agent to produce a stable dry pigment powder, and subsequently dispersed in double- distilled water using ultrasonic treatment. An acrylic resin binder and zinc oxide stabilizer are gradually incorporated, followed by further sonication to obtain a homogeneous paint formulation. The resulting paint exhibits enhanced NIR reflectance while utilizing renewable, plant-derived pigments in place of conventional synthetic colorants. The process provides an environmentally sustainable coating with improved pigment dispersion, formulation stability, and heat-reflective performance suitable for energy-efficient building applications.
