Abstract: The risks of suffering a sudden death from overdosing while living alone are particularly high for elderly patients, many of whom may be undiagnosed. This invention provides a complete wrist-worn, wrist-mounted system that can continuously monitor vital signs (oxygen saturation, heart rate, skin temperature and movement) and implement a multi-tiered response intervention protocol that utilizes sensor data from multiple sources to deliver context sensitive responses (e.g., local acoustic nudges verified with inertial motion sensors and alarms that penetrate the home) while minimizing false positives through closed-loop validation. The lightweight prototype uses sensor components and a modest power consumption microcontroller to provide extended battery life and onboard structured log files in a clinician accessible format for retrospective study of sleep safety. This clinical quality of monitoring will address gaps in personal sleep safety and provide scalable protection to different populations in resource limited settings.
