Abstract: An autonomous wheelchair navigation system (100) is provided for adaptive navigation in dynamic and semantically complex environments using semantic scene understanding and natural language interaction. The system includes a perception unit (102) comprising RGB-D cameras and a 3D LiDAR for capturing real-time visual and depth data of the surroundings. A mapping engine (104) incorporating a Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) processor (106) and an open-set 3D semantic instance mapping (O3D-SIM) pipeline (108) processes the data to generate semantic instance maps integrating geometric and semantic information. A language interpretation engine (110) interprets user speech commands to extract navigation goals. A navigation controller (112) plans and executes trajectories, while a wheelchair motion controller (114) converts planned paths into motor actuation signals. A scene-change detection system (116) continuously updates the O3D-SIM (118) to detect, reason, and adapt to object displacements, enabling autonomous re-planning and context-aware navigation. FIG. 1
