MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641101499 A) filed by St. Josephs College Of Engineering; and Mr. R. Elanthirayan on August 22, 2026, for Autonomous Road Hazard Detection Robot.

Inventors include St. Josephs College Of Engineering; Mr. R. Elanthirayan; Bhuvaneshwari. T; and Arulmozhi. R.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: Road hazards like potholes and road cracks are really bad for cars. Can cause accidents. Checking the roads by hand takes a lot of time. Is not very effective. So we made a robot called the Autonomous Road Hazard Detection Robot to find these problems, on the road. This robot uses a thing called an Arduino UNO to control it. It also has a sensor that uses sound waves to find things in the way another sensor that feels vibrations to find potholes and a camera to take pictures of the problems it finds. When the robot finds a problem it uses the information from the sensors. Turns on a light and a loud noise to warn people. It also sends a message to a phone or other device using a Bluetooth connection so people can know about the problem away without needing the internet. The Autonomous Road Hazard Detection Robot has been proposed to serve as a budget-friendly, easy-to-use, and portable means of detecting road hazards without constant human intervention. The robot can be programmed to move around the desired path on its own while keeping a tab on the state of the road surface by using the onboard sensors. This robot is useful for applications that include road inspections in college/university campuses, industries, residential complexes, car parks, and other similar controlled environments where road maintenance is regularly required. The ultrasonic sensor helps the robot detect any obstacles in its way, and the vibration sensor helps detect potholes and rough surfaces. The ESP32-CAM sensor module is used to capture pictures of the detected hazards, while the Arduino UNO manages all the sensor readings and operates the robot. As soon as the hazards are detected, an immediate alarm is sent to the user in the form of sound and light with the help of the LED and buzzer. Furthermore, the detected hazard information is relayed to a mobile phone within the vicinity through the Bluetooth module of the robot.
