MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611110390 A) filed by Chandigarh University on September 14, 2026, for Autonomous Multi-Modal Rover System For Predictive Detection And Monitoring Of Subsurface Sinkhole Formation.
Inventors include Priyansh Sharma; Akshit Chaudhary; and Kamaldeep Kaur.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an autonomous geotechnical intelligence system for predictive detection and assessment of sinkhole formation and subsurface ground instability. The system comprises a car-sized, self-navigating rover equipped with multi-modal subsurface sensing, active ground interaction, onboard intelligence, and communication modules. The invention continuously scans roads and terrain using complementary 10 subsurface sensing techniques while actively interrogating the ground through controlled stress and vibration to evaluate structural response. Sensor data is fused onboard to generate location-specific subsurface response fingerprints, which are compared longitudinally to identify progressive degradation. The system constructs and updates a digital twin of subsurface layers and produces predictive risk assessments, including sinkhole likelihood 15 and progression severity. Automated alerts and actionable outputs are generated for infrastructure monitoring and preventive maintenance. The invention enables proactive, scalable, and autonomous sinkhole intelligence, overcoming limitations of manual, static, and reactive prior art systems.
