Abstract: The present invention relates to an Autonomous Drone Communication and Recovery System Using LTE-Based MAVLink Routing Through a Virtual Private Network. It provides secure long-range telemetry and command capability between an unmanned aerial vehicle and a remote Ground Control Station. The onboard computer is connected to a flight controller and has internet connectivity through an LTE/4G cellular module. The onboard computer and Ground Control Station are on the same encrypted virtual private network, and MAVLink packets are routed through UDP without the need for static IP addressing, router port forwarding, or a dedicated cloud relay server. Telemetry from the flight controller is sent to the Ground Control Station from the onboard computer and mission commands are sent back to the flight controller. It also keeps track of communications health through heartbeat, VPN reachability or packet-flow checks. If the communication loss exceeds a defined timeout, the onboard computer will autonomously take a recovery action, preferably Return-to-Launch, via MAVLink.
