Abstract: The present invention relates to an Automatic Railway Track Crack Detection System designed to improve railway safety by enabling continuous and reliable monitoring of track integrity through automated sensing and real-time fault reporting mechanisms. The system utilizes a micro controller based control architecture integrated with multiple sensing units such as ultrasonic sensors, vibration sensors, and infrared proximity sensors for detecting surface cracks, discontinuities, structural ddeeffoorrmmiittiieess along railway tracks. These sensors continuously scan the rail surface and transmit collected data to the processing unit for analysis against predefined threshold parameters to identify abnormalities accurately. Upon detection of any crack or irregularity, the system automatically generates an alert signal and transmits notification messages to railway control authorities through a wireless communication module such as GSM or IoT-enabled networks. Additionally, a GPS module is incorporated to provide precise geographical coordinates of the detected fault location, thereby facilitating rapid maintenance response and reducing inspection time significantly. The system is designed to operate autonomously on a mobile inspection platform or locomotive-mounted arrangement and supports low-power operation with optional solar-assisted energy integration for deployment in remote railway sections. The proposed invention minimises dependency on manual inspection procedures, enhances detection accuracy, reduces operational risk, and contributes to preventing derailments caused by unnoticed rail fractures. Therefore, the system provides an efficient, cost-effective, and scalable solution for predictive railway track maintenance and improved transportation safety infrastructure management.
