Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated linguistic skill assessment system for evaluating a learner’s language proficiency through written and spoken responses. The system comprises a user interface, an assessment task repository, a response processing module, an evaluation module, a feedback generation module, and a performance record. The user interface presents tasks and receives selected answers, written text, or audio recordings. The assessment task repository stores prompts, reference material, difficulty information, and scoring criteria. The response processing module prepares written submissions for analysis and processes audio recordings to obtain transcripts and speech characteristics. The evaluation module applies task-specific criteria to assess relevant skills, including grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing coherence, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and speaking fluency. It generates skill-specific results and may combine them into an overall score. Where an audio transcript is uncertain or a response is ambiguous, the system records the uncertainty and may refer the response for human review. The feedback generation module provides comments linked to the learner’s response and identifies areas for improvement. The performance record stores submissions, scores, feedback, and task details to support assessment over time. A task selection module may recommend subsequent tasks based on the learner’s recorded performance. An evaluator review interface permits an authorized person to inspect responses and adjust results when required. The system thereby supports timely assessment, consistent application of scoring criteria, and feedback for learners across different assessment settings.
