Abstract: The present invention concerns an Auto-Grind Sink comprising a sink or washbasin with a specially designed drain outlet with an integrated compact solid-particle grinding mechanism. The grinding mechanism is located inside or near the drain opening (also known as Drain Nostril Grinding Assembly) and is designed to chop small solid waste particles, food particles, hair, sludge and other materials that can accumulate in the drain into smaller particles to clear the water and avoid drain blockage. The proposed system is constructed in the drain structure to integrate a micro-grinding blade assembly, flow responsive activation, blockage detection, and automatic flushing and self-cleaning mechanism, which are all missing in conventional sink strainers and conventional garbage disposals. The grinding assembly is selectively activated by an abnormal accumulation of water or restricted drainage detected by a sensor or flow monitoring. The blade can be driven alternately forward and backward to break up material that may have built up, and then forward again to release material from the surface of the blade. By inducing a cyclonic (vortex or jet) flow around the grinding assembly a passage for controlled water flushing is created to carry fragmented material through the passage of the drainage pipe. Additionally, the system can feature an anti-corrosion/anti-fouling surface coating, removable blade cartridge, safety interlock, overload protection and foreign-object detection. The invention is significantly useful in kitchen sinks, utility sinks, washbasins and other sink types where small solid particles accumulate and cause stagnant water, bad odour and microbial growth and pipe clogging
