Abstract: An assistive navigation apparatus (100) for visually impaired individuals is disclosed. The apparatus (100) includes a processor (106) and a memory (108) storing instructions that, when executed by the processor (106), capture, by a capture unit (110), a visual input from an environment surrounding a user. A mode-switching unit (112) selectively activates one vision pipeline at a time from a plurality of vision pipelines (114) based on a received interrupt signal. Each activated vision pipeline processes the visual input to generate a descriptive output corresponding to at least one environmental condition. A speech synthesis unit (116) converts the descriptive output into an audio signal and delivers the audio signal to the user. A safety subsystem (104) continuously determines a geographic position of the apparatus (100) and transmits a location-based alert to at least one recipient upon receiving a trigger signal, independently of the plurality of vision pipelines (114).
