Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is an assistive narrative navigation cane for context-aware guidance of visually impaired individuals. The cane comprises a cane body for handheld movement along a walking path, a camera unit mounted on the cane body to capture environmental image frames ahead of the walking path and a ground-sensing unit oriented toward a support surface adjacent to the walking path. An embedded processing unit housed by the cane body is operatively connected to the camera unit and the ground- sensing unit. A scene-change module executed by the embedded processing unit compares a current frame hash with a stored frame hash before scene analysis is permitted. A scene interpretation unit identifies objects, pathways and ground-level hazards from the environmental image frames. An audio output unit generates spoken navigation guidance from the identified objects, pathways and ground-level hazards.
