Abstract: ABSTRACT Water is an essential resource for agricultural production and efficient irrigation is key to minimize unproductive water use. Traditional irrigation systems are commonly operated based on a fixed schedule and do not consider the actual moisture content of the soil or fluctuations in the weather. Aqua Sense – Adaptive Weather and Soil Based Smart Drip Irrigation System for Precision Agriculture is proposed to address this issue. The system monitors the soil moisture in addition to selected weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall. An ESP32 microcontroller gathers the sensor readings and decides whether irrigation is required. If the level of soil moisture falls below the required level and no rainfall is detected the ESP32 will activate the water pump and solenoid valve to provide water via a drip irrigation system. The irrigation process is stopped when sufficient moisture is present in the soil or if rainfall is detected to avoid unproductive watering. Thus, the system prevents unnecessary watering and ensures efficient use of available water. The drip irrigation system can deliver the water close to the root zone thus minimizing losses during the irrigation process. The system can be employed in field crops, vegetable crops, and nursery plants. IoT connectivity can be incorporated into the system to monitor the soil and irrigation conditions remotely. Therefore, Aqua Sense provides an automated irrigation approach that considers both the soil and weather to promote timely irrigation and efficient water management in agriculture.
