Abstract: ABSTRACT An apparatus (100) for transdermal drug delivery includes a current source (102) configured to deliver electrical current through a drug reservoir layer (104) into a patient's skin. A photovoltaic cell array (106) is electrically connected to the current source (102) and configured to power the current source (102) from ambient light. A phase-change material reservoir (108) is thermally interposed between the photovoltaic cell array (106) and the drug reservoir layer (104) and configured to undergo solid-to-liquid phase transition upon absorbing thermal energy incident on the photovoltaic cell array (106). A GSM transceiver (110) is configured to transmit short message service messages carrying status data of the apparatus (100) over a cellular network to a designated phone number. The solid-to-liquid phase transition of the phase-change material reservoir (108) replaces active thermal management, reducing total power consumption to within a range sustainably supplied by the photovoltaic cell array (106).
