Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to non-destructive elemental analysis of particulate residues on a biological surface . The apparatus (100) includes a pulsed laser source (102) a motor drive circuit (104), a laser trigger circuit (106), a gate timing circuit (108), an intensified charge-coupled device detector (110), and a signal processing circuit (112). The motor drive circuit (104) generates positioning signals across a biological surface and transmits a positioning confirmation signal to the laser trigger circuit (106). The laser trigger circuit (106) fires the pulsed laser source (102) upon receiving the positioning confirmation signal. The gate timing circuit (108) generates a gate control signal within a sub-100 nanosecond window following each optical pulse. The intensified charge-coupled device detector (110) captures time-resolved emission spectra. The signal processing circuit (112) generates an output indication by comparing concentration ratios of lead, barium, and antimony against a stored reference elemental ratio characteristic of gunshot residue.
