Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to microfluidic cell separation. The apparatus (100) includes a monolithic substrate (102) having a micropillar array region (104), outlet channels (106), and optical waveguide channels (108) co-formed in a single injection molding operation. Optical fibers (110) span laterally across respective outlet channels (106), with a light source (112) and photodetector (114) optically coupled to each fiber (110). The photodetector (114) generates electrical signals proportional to optical intensity as cells pass through the outlet channels (106). A sample reservoir (118) connected through a fluid conduit (202) generates hydrostatic pressure (204) as the sole driving force for fluid flow. The micropillar array region (104) separates cells by diameter, displacing cells exceeding a threshold diameter into a first subset of outlet channels (106) while directing smaller cells into a second subset.
