Abstract: ABSTRACT The present disclosure relates to apparatus and methods for field-deployable detection of firearm discharge residues. The apparatus (102) includes a pulsed laser source (104) emitting optical pulses at a blue wavelength within an optical transmission window of injection-molded polymer material, generating plasma emission light upon irradiation of the biological surface. A transmission diffraction grating (106), formed entirely in injection-molded polymer material, disperses the plasma emission light onto a linear image sensor (108), both positioned within a snap-fit optical housing assembly (110) having molded alignment features. A hardware processor (110) receives intensity values from the linear image sensor 108, maps them to wavelength positions generating a wavelength-resolved intensity profile, and compares the profile against stored reference signatures of firearm discharge residue constituents. A wireless communication transceiver (112) transmits a residue detection signal to an external computing device, which renders a determination of presence or absence of firearm discharge residues.
