MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541016764 A) filed by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute For Medical Sciences And Technology on February 26, 2025, for Apparatus And Method For Dynamic Stabilization Of A Spinal Motion Segment.

Inventors include Arvind Kumar Prajapati; Muraleedharan Chirathodi Vylappil; Ganesh Divakar; Unnikrishnan Manappadan Mohanan Number; and Krishnakumar Kesavapisharady.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: A spinal dynamic stabilization apparatus and method are disclosed for facilitating physiological motion of a spinal segment without fusion. The apparatus includes at least two pedicle screws (4) implanted in adjacent vertebrae (1) and a braided flexible rod (2) extending therebetween. The braided flexible rod (2) includes an outer layer (8) and a middle layer (9) arranged concentrically in braided topology at different braiding angles, and optionally an inner layer (10). The graded stiffness configuration provides nonlinear stiffness under axial loading, allowing controlled bending and physiological axial displacement while withstanding loads of about 500 N and moments of about 10 Nm. A modified set screw (7) enhances contact area and torque transmission for secure fixation within the head (6) of the pedicle screw (4). The bio-inspired multilayer braided structure enables dynamic stabilization and may reduce stress on adjacent segments compared to rigid fusion constructs. (FIG. 1)
