Abstract: ABSTRACT Disclosed herein is an antimicrobial heterocyclic compound and method (100) for preparation thereof, the method (100) comprising providing a naphthalene-based carbohydrazide starting compound, subjecting naphthalene-based carbohydrazide starting compound to a cyclization reaction in an alcoholic reaction medium to form a 4-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)naphthalen-2-ol intermediate and reacting 4-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)naphthalen-2-ol intertermediate with a substituted Isatin derivative in the presence of an acid catalyst to form an Isatin-linked 1,3,4-oxadiazole compound. The method may include naphthalene-based carbohydrazide starting compound is 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic carbohydrazide. The method may include cyclization reaction carried out in the presence of carbon disulfide and potassium hydroxide. The method may includes intermediate is 4-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)naphthalen-2-ol. The method may include reaction of the 4-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)naphthalen-2-ol intermediate with the substituted Isatin derivative carried out in the presence of glacial acetic acid. The method may include glacial acetic acid is present in a catalytic amount. The method may include Isatin-linked 1,3,4- oxadiazole compound is 3-hydroxy-3-((5-(2- hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)thio)indolin-2-one.
