MUMBAI, India, June 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641073006 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on June 12, 2026, for Angulinear Device For Accurate Measurement Of Month Opening Integrated Angular-Linear Conversion.
Inventors include Dr. Pakkeerammal Farhaanaa A; Dr. Roland Prehtipa; and Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on June 26, 2026, under issue no. 26/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to an angulinear device for measuring mouth opening, wherein angular measurement is integrated with linear distance derivation in a single mechanical instrument. The device comprises two elongated arms of equal and known length pivotally connected at one end, such that divergence of the arms during mouth opening resuits in the formation of an angle at the pivot region. The angular displacement formed between the arms is directly measured and is converted into a linear interincisal or interalveolar distance using the Law of Cosines, with the arm lengths serving as constant parameters. By capturing the angular component of mandibular movement, the invention enables more accurate representation of mouth opening compared to conventional linear measuring instruments that assume linear mandibular displacement. The device is mechanical, non-electronic, reusable, and economical, and is suitable for use in patients with restricted mouth opening. The invention facilitates objective and reproducible measurement of mouth opening for clinical assessment, treatment monitoring, and research application
