Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved orthodontic cutting instrument, specifically a pin and ligature cutter with replaceable cutting inserts. The cutter comprises two handles pivotally connected by a pivot joint and two opposing jaws terminating in a cutting head region. Each jaw is provided with a superiorly positioned receiving slot configured to removably accommodate a hardened cutting insert having a sharpened cutting edge. Two opposing inserts together form a double-edge cutting interface for cutting orthodontic ligature wires, pins, and auxiliary metallic components. The inserts are retained within the receiving slots through frictional engagement, press-fit retention, and geometric interlocking features such as dovetail or stepped configurations, enabling resistance to torsional, shear, and compressive forces encountered during clinical use. The modular design permits selective replacement of worn cutting edges while reusing the instrument body, thereby extending instrument lifespan, reducing cost, and minimizing biomedical waste.
