MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641114386 A) filed by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Vignana Jyothi Institute Of Engineering And Technology on September 24, 2026, for An Optimized Biodegradable Mg-Zn-Ca Alloy With Enhanced Mechanical Strength And Controlled Degradation For Temporary Orthopedic Implants.
Inventor includes Dr. Hazari Naresh.
The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT [0038] For orthopedic implant applications, biodegradable metals like magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) are becoming more popular because they offer short-term mechanical support and progressively break down inside the human body, removing the need for additional surgical removal. However, their actual application is limited by the poor mechanical strength of zinc and the rapid rate of corrosion of magnesium. The goal of this research is to create and optimize magnesium-zinc-calcium (Mg-Zn-Ca) alloys in order to get around these restrictions by striking a balance between mechanical strength, biodegradation rate. To investigate their microstructure and phase development, alloys with regulated compositions were created and examined using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Tensile and hardness tests were used to evaluate mechanical qualities, while immersion in simulated bodily fluid were used to evaluate corrosion behaviour.
