Abstract: An intraoral dental isolation appliance (100) for use in a mandibular posterior region is disclosed. The appliance (100) includes a non-absorbent unitary flexible molded body (110) formed of a biocompatible elastomeric material and having an open-frame configuration. The body (110) includes a cotton-roll-retaining portion (120) provided at a first end region and defining an open concave cradle configured to removably receive and support a separate cylindrical dental cotton roll (150). A tongue- retracting paddle (130) is integrally molded with the body (110), positioned inwardly of the cotton-roll-retaining portion (120), and formed as a broad upright rounded shield having a smooth tongue-contacting surface. Upper and lower bridge portions (102, 104) define an open through-window. During use, the appliance (100) retains the cotton roll (150) adjacent mandibular posterior teeth while laterally displacing the tongue (140) away from an operative dental site.
