MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641076912 A) filed by Sr University on June 22, 2026, for An Intelligent Obstacle Detection And Avoidance System For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles In Fogg Environments.
Inventors include Lade Gunakar Rao; and Dr. K. Rajchandar.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: AN INTELLIGENT OBSTACLE DETECTION AND AVOIDANCE SYSTEM FOR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES IN FOGG ENVIRONMENTS The present invention relates to an intelligent obstacle detection and avoidance system for unmanned aerial vehicles operating in Featureless, Obscured, GPS-denied, and Geometrically complex (FOGG) environments. The system comprises multiple onboard sensors including radar, LiDAR, flash LiDAR, vision sensors, thermal cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and inertial measurement units. Sensor data are processed through a probabilistic sensor fusion framework that generates an Uncertainty-Aware Occupancy Grid containing obstacle information and associated confidence levels. An adaptive sensor weighting and attention gating mechanism dynamically adjusts the contribution of individual sensors according to environmental conditions. The system further includes obstacle detection and tracking, risk map generation, learning and adaptation, trajectory planning, and flight control modules. Computationally intensive deep learning processes are selectively activated based on uncertainty thresholds to reduce energy consumption. The invention enables reliable autonomous navigation, collision avoidance, and safe operation of UAVs in low- visibility, GPS-denied, and geometrically complex environments.
