Inventors include Dr. S. Rajalaxmi; Lakshanya R; Murugeshwari K; Sanmathi S; and Vedhikaa P.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: The proposed system is a portable Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT) system for home-based monitoring of sleep parameters. Sleep apnea is a disorder in which breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep, causing a decrease in the supply of oxygen and affecting the quality of sleep. The conventional diagnostic procedures such as Polysomnography (PSG) are not only expensive but also require the patient to spend a night in a hospital, which can be uncomfortable. The existing Home Sleep Testing systems record physiological parameters but lack detailed information on sleep stages. The proposed system was designed to address most of the shortcomings of the current HSAT systems. The proposed Home Sleep Apnea Testing system was designed to overcome the limitations of the current systems by recording physiological parameters such as oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, and blood pressure. The system also records Electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor and analyze the sleep stage of the patient. The recorded EEG signals can be used to extract additional information relating to sleep stages alongside the physiological parameters usually collected during Home Sleep Testing. This will ensure that multiple sleep parameters are monitored using a single device in a convenient and portable manner. The proposed system will use a headband that will be used in conjunction with an inbuilt display for monitoring the recorded data. The caregiver will be able to view the real-time physiological data uploaded to the system through a website. A closer look at the system design reveals electrodes, signal conditioning and acquisition circuitries, physiological sensors, a microcontroller, memory, wireless connectivity, and a power supply. The system will be a portable and convenient way of performing an overnight sleep study. Compared to the conventional systems, it will record more parameters, including physiological measurements and sleep stages estimated from the EEG signals. The proposed system will offer a cost-effective method of monitoring physiological parameters associated with sleep stages.
