Abstract: ABSTRACT AN INTEGRATED STRUCTURAL MOUNTING SYSTEM FOR CO-ALIGNED LIDAR-RGB-D SENSING AND COLOUR-ENRICHED 3D POINT CLOUD GENERATION METHOD The present invention relates, in general, to the field of three-dimensional (3D) environmental perception, more particularly, the invention relates (a) to an integrated structural mounting system that rigidly co-aligns a planar 2D Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor, a servo-driven elevation actuator and a Red-Green-Blue-Depth (RGB-D) camera within a single, dimensionally-constrained chassis with embedded geometric offsets, and (b) to a method for generating a colour-enriched 3D point cloud by transforming the LiDAR-derived 3D point cloud from a servo coordinate frame into the camera optical coordinate frame and per-point sampling the RGB image of the said RGB-D camera; finally it finds application, without limitation, in indoor robotics, autonomous navigation, simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM), advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), terrain mapping, and inspection of confined or hazardous environments.
