MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641091308 A) filed by Sri Venkateswara College Of Engineering on July 28, 2026, for An Integrated Microbial Process For Enhanced Biodegradation Of Keratinous Feather Waste Into Protein-Rich Hydrolysates Using Sugarcane Bagasse As Co-Substrate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a fermentation co-substrate composition comprising keratin-rich poultry feather waste and sugarcane bagasse in a defined weight ratio (poultry feather waste – 2 g/L, sugarcane bagasse – 1 g/L), and to an environmentally sustainable and economically viable bioprocess employing the said co-substrate for the simultaneous valorisation of both waste streams through microbial fermentation, exemplified using a keratinase-producing Aeribacillus pallidus MPX2 (Accession No. OM911929). The fermentation is carried out under optimised conditions of initial pH (6.5 – 9) and temperature (25 – 40)°C, shaking at 150 rpm for 72 hrs, achieving 99% efficient hydrolysis of the recalcitrant keratin matrix into soluble peptides. The resulting protein-rich hydrolysate is characterised by FTIR and RP- HPLC analyses confirming keratin degradation and amino acid generation. The invention provides a scalable, chemical-free, and cost-effective alternative to conventional feather disposal methods, converting two major waste streams into value-added biomolecules suitable for industrial applications, in accordance with circular bioeconomy principles.
