MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611101296 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kanpur on August 21, 2026, for An Integrated 3d-Printed Interbody Spacer For Spinal Fusion Procedures.

Inventors include Kumar, Ashok; Mehrotra, Shreya; Gupta, Antrakrate; Bhunia, Bibhas Kumar; Dash, Abhishek; and Jha, Shikhar Krishn.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: 3D-printed interbody spacer (100) for spinal fusion procedures is provided. The spacer (100) involves an outer cage (102) of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) integrated with an osteoconductive nano-cement core that can be optionally mixed with autologous bone grafts or be used as a filler for delivery of antibiotics/ antibacterial nanoparticles, achieving superior load sharing, enhanced fusion, reduced subsidence and enhanced biological activity. The outer cage (102) is biomechanically matched to bone, while internal architecture is designed to maximize graft volume, enhance nutrient flow, and promote uniform fusion across an intervertebral space. The spacer (100) is integrated with 3D-printed porosity, anti-slip surface features, and patient-specific geometry that ensures optimal structural stability, controlled graft retention, and improved biological performance, delivering long-term clinical outcomes that surpass those of conventional spacers or cages. The disclosure offers a scalable, cost- effective, and clinically superior solution for domestic and international spinal fusion markets.
