Abstract: An inhalable microencapsulated drug delivery system is disclosed for pulmonary administration of therapeutic agents. The system includes a drug-containing core, an encapsulating wall, a dispersion-modifying outer layer, engineered carrier particles, a moisture control unit, a dose metering chamber, an aerosolization passage, and a mouthpiece outlet. The microcapsules protect the active ingredient during storage and inhalation, disperse as respirable particles, and release the drug after deposition in the respiratory tract through hydration, diffusion, dissolution, or controlled wall erosion.
