Abstract: ABSTRACT AN IMPROVED FIRE-RETARDANT WOVEN CARPET WITH CUSTOMISED SURFACE-PRINTED DESIGNS AND A SYSTEM AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THEREOF The system of the present invention for manufacturing fire- retardant woven carpet with surface-printed designs, is an integrated production line enabling sequential production steps from the feeding of carpet, surface-printing of intricate multicolour designs as per a customer specification, steaming, post-washing, drying, applying improved fire-retardant composition on the reverse side of the carpet followed by shearing and producing finished carpet. The carpet is first woven preferably as a Wilton weave from woollen or wool-blend pile yarn (50) and is given dimensional stability by the integration of a stabilising ("tight") backbone yarn (20), preferably jute, into the woven structure. The system enables carrying out the aforesaid operations at large architectural format producing carpet of the order of 3.66 to 4.0 metres in width and 20 to 60 metres in length while maintaining registration of the printed design across the full width and length without distortion, and while retaining dimensional stability and the required fire-retardant performance. As against the prescribed self-extinguishing time of less than fifteen seconds, with no burning drips to continue flaming for more than five seconds after falling, and burning length of less than eight inches, the fire-retardant treated carpet of the present invention self-extinguishes within 4 seconds, the burn length is less than 4- 5 inches and with no drips whatsoever.
