Abstract: A rapid hardening cement concrete paver block incorporating corundum as a mineral admixture, and a method for its manufacture, are disclosed. The paver block is manufactured from rapid hardening cement, fine aggregate comprising manufactured sand, coarse aggregate, water, a superplasticizer, and corundum, a crystalline form of aluminium oxide, incorporated into the concrete mix as a mineral admixture. The rapid hardening cement causes the paver block to attain strength rapidly, increasing the rate of production, while the superplasticizer permits the water content to be reduced while maintaining workability. The corundum is incorporated in a proportion in the range of about 5% to about 15%, it having been found that the compressive, split tensile, and flexural strength of the paver block increase with increasing proportion of corundum up to about 15% and decrease thereafter, so that about 15% is an optimum, while the water absorption decreases progressively with increasing proportion of corundum. In a particular embodiment the concrete is of grade M35 with a water-cement ratio of about 0.45, the superplasticizer is up to about 2% by weight of cement, and the zig-zag paver block of about 250 by 150 by 60 millimetres is moulded, compacted, demoulded, and water-cured, and evaluated by compressive, split tensile, flexural, and water absorption tests. The invention provides a high-strength, durable, rapidly produced paver block using an abundant and inexpensive mineral.
