Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION AN EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR VISUALISATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF SUPERCAVITY FORMATION AROUND A HIGH-SPEED UNDERWATER PROJECTILE An experimental apparatus and method for investigating supercavity formation around a high-speed underwater projectile are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a projectile-launching system (10) arranged to launch a projectile (26) into a transparent test tank (14) through a firing port and mounting arrangement (12), the launching system (10) being vertically adjustable to vary the depth of submergence of the projectile trajectory; a high-speed imaging system (16) positioned laterally with respect to the trajectory for recording the transient development of the cavity; an illumination system (18) positioned substantially opposite the imaging system (16) and synchronised with the projectile launch; and a downstream, deformable, energy- absorbing arrangement (22) for safely arresting the projectile (26). A corresponding method determines instantaneous projectile velocity from the displacement of a reference point on the projectile (26) between consecutive high-speed image frames, computes a cavitation number therefrom, measures the maximum cavity diameter and cavity length from the recorded images, and compares the measured cavity dimensions with dimensions predicted by an analytical supercavity model, thereby providing a repeatable experimental framework for generating validation data for analytical and computational models of supercavitating flow.
