Abstract: An engineered bismuth ferrite nanoparticle platform for coupled magnetic-electric functional applications is disclosed. Nanoparticles of substantially phase-pure perovskite bismuth ferrite are size-controlled below the sixty-two nanometer spin cycloid period, preferably ten to fifty nanometers, whereby the cycloid is geometrically suppressed and the canted moment otherwise self-cancelling is unlocked as ambient-temperature net magnetization. Co-designed dual-site substitution, by rare-earth or alkaline-earth ions at the bismuth site to suppress the cycloid chemically and stabilize the perovskite against bismuth volatilization, and by transition metal ions at the iron site to suppress oxygen vacancies and ferrous iron and thereby leakage conduction, is jointly proportioned to preserve ferroelectric distortion and magnetic ordering. A functional shell of passivating oxide, silica, polymer, or biocompatible coating confers stability, dispersibility, and application-specific functionality. Solution synthesis with bismuth excess, a narrow crystallization window, and acid washing yields phase-pure particles exhibiting net magnetization, switchable low-leakage polarization, and measurable magnetoelectric coupling for sensing, harvesting, memory, photocatalysis, and wireless neural stimulation.
