MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641101048 A) filed by Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering on August 20, 2026, for An Energy Harvesting Iot Sensor Device With Adaptive Edge Intelligence For Smart Infrastructure.
Inventors include Dr. M. Mohammed Mustafa; Dr. P. Dinesh Kumar; A. Irfan Khan; and G. Kishore Kannan.
The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a "Smart Infrastructure" energy harvesting IoT Sensor Device, which provides autonomous, long- term, energy-efficient monitoring of critical infrastructure, like bridges, buildings, pipelines, industrial facilities, transportation networks, smart city assets, etc. The proposed device has a multi-source energy harvesting unit that harvests solar, piezoelectric vibration, thermoelectric and radio frequency (RF) ambient energy, optimizes it using an intelligent Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller and stores it in a hybrid energy storage system using a supercapacitor and rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It features several environmental and structural sensors to capture data in real time, and an adaptive Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) engine to process data locally, detect anomalies, predict maintenance needs, diagnose sensor issues, optimize sampling, and make energy-conscious decisions. The invention is capable of dynamically changing the sensing and computing operations according to the energy harvested to allow a greatly lengthened operational life, while reducing the need for maintenance. The proposed invention also includes a dynamic communication management module that automatically chooses the most energy-efficient wireless protocol (LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, BLE, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, 5G or others) based on the available energy, communication ranges, signal quality and priority of the data. Instead of sending raw sensor data to an edge gateway or cloud platform for continuous processing, the device implements an event-driven approach where only significant events and abnormal conditions are securely sent to an edge gateway or cloud platform for visualization, analytics, and maintenance planning. Supporting sustainable smart infrastructure monitoring in remote or resource constrained environments is enhanced via a scalable, self-powered, low maintenance IoT sensing solution that integrates multi-source energy harvesting, hybrid energy storage, adaptive edge AI, intelligent communication and predictive analytics, while minimizing operational costs, and improving reliability and energy efficiency.
