Abstract: The present invention relates to an encapsulated bioformulation for decomposition of biodegradable kitchen waste. The bioformulation comprises a selected microbial consortium including at least two bacterial strains, at least two fungal strains and at least one actinomycete strain encapsulated within a calcium alginate matrix formed from sodium alginate and calcium chloride. The encapsulating matrix further comprises skim milk powder and xanthan gum. The encapsulated bioformulation is prepared by incorporating the microbial consortium into a sodium alginate solution, followed by dropwise extrusion into a calcium chloride solution to form calcium alginate beads. Upon application to biodegradable kitchen waste, the encapsulated microorganisms are gradually released to facilitate biodegradation of organic matter and conversion of the waste into compost. The invention is useful for household, institutional and community-level biodegradable kitchen waste management.
