Abstract: Three-way intersections in urban areas are sources of congestion and result in longer wait times and fuel usage. We use embedded technology and ultrasonic sensors to track road activity and therefore solve this problem. This information is used to optimise the timing of the traffic lights so as to prevent unnecessary delays. There's also an opportunity for us to use RFID to identify emergency vehicles like ambulances, and then help them arrive at their destination faster, and safer. The Microcontroller (MCU) is the control unit of the system which is used to communicate with the sensors and manage the traffic controlling and information display units. The technologies can be integrated to reduce congestion at three-way intersections and improve the traffic flow and safety for everyone in the city.
