MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541074980 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education on December 18, 2025, for An Electromagnetic Energy Harvesting System With Metamaterial- Integrated Fractal Antenna For Portable Biomedical Devices.

Inventors include Shyampradeep K; Madhushankara M; and Ribu Mathew.

The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.

Abstract: The present invention provides a metamaterial-integrated fractal antenna system for efficient energy harvesting in portable biomedical and wearable devices. The system incorporates fractal antenna geometries combined with metamaterials exhibiting negative refractive indices, enabling multi-band resonance across frequencies from 2 to 20 GHz. A systematic Thermal, Electrical, and Mechanical (TEM) analysis guides material selection for conductive, substrate, and metamaterial layers, ensuring flexibility, low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), and optimal electromagnetic performance. The antenna structure includes a split-ring resonator metamaterial design and a matching circuit to maximize power transfer, paired with a rectifier circuit capable of converting harvested RF energy into DC voltage exceeding 5V. This integration significantly reduces dependence on conventional batteries, enhances energy capture efficiency, and supports the continuous operation of low-power biomedical devices. The invention advances wireless power transfer solutions, addressing critical challenges in sustainable energy sourcing for compact, wearable medical technologies. FIG.1A
