Abstract: Urban waste management continues to pose significant challenges, demanding smarter and more efficient interventions at the household level. This project proposes the design and implementation of an Automated Domestic Waste Segregation Dustbin, an intelligent system that autonomously separates household waste into wet and dry categories directly at the point of disposal. The prototype incorporates ultrasonic sensors to continuously monitor waste levels in both compartments, alongside odour sensors that detect foul smell arising from decomposing waste. A human detection mechanism enables the lid to open automatically upon sensing an approaching user, while a built-in safety feature keeps the lid shut once the bin reaches full capacity, preventing any overflow of segregated waste. Real-time alerts regarding fill status, odour levels, and collection schedules are transmitted to municipal authorities through an integrated GSM module, enabling prompt and informed waste collection. By encouraging segregation at the source, the system significantly simplifies further waste processing — wet waste can be readily converted into organic compost, while dry waste can be systematically sorted for recycling or treatment. This not only reduces dependence on manual labour but also promotes improved sanitation and environmental sustainability. The proposed prototype offers a practical, scalable, and cost-efficient pathway toward the realization of smart automated waste management in modern urban households.
